Bad News: I Will Probably Delay Sunday's Post
That moment when you're at the mercy of translators and editors
Good evening.
As you saw from the title, there’s a good chance I will have to delay my post on Aeschylus’ Agamemnon until February 19.
The short answer as to why: the translation I’ve been reading is causing me issues. Or, perhaps it’s whoever put the work into electronic form that is responsible for the issues. When I compare the translation to other translations, I’m getting different impressions about what’s being said.
As a result, I’ve decided to reread Agamemnon again using a different translation and take notes all over again. Last time, that took two days to complete. Assuming that that’s how long it’ll take this time, I don’t think I could fully write my post on Saturday and have it ready for Sunday morning. At least, not a post I would be satisfied with.
For now, I feel better about this other translation. What’s better, this particular translator worked on all seven of Aeschylus’ plays, so I won’t have to bounce around from translator to translator and get used to their style.
The only issues I may have is that it’s more of a poetic translation than a prose translation—and I struggle with poetry.
I guess there’s no better time to grow like the present.
May your days be filled with grace.
